Tsavo East National Park is one of Kenya’s largest and most atmospheric wildernesses — a wide, red-dust landscape of open plains, thorn scrub, seasonal rivers and dramatic geological features. The park is famed for its huge elephant herds (the iconic “red elephants” that wallow in rust-coloured dust), excellent big-game viewing and landmark sights like Mudanda Rock and the Yatta Plateau (the world’s longest lava flow). Tsavo East’s sweeping vistas and sparse vegetation make wildlife easy to spot: expect elephants, buffalo, lion, giraffe, zebra and prolific birdlife across habitats that change with the seasons.
Visitors come to Tsavo East for authentic, off-the-beaten-track safaris and spectacular photographic light. Typical activities include morning and afternoon game drives, guided birding, geology- and history-focused excursions (the park’s man-eater lion legacy is part of its lore) and longer overland routes that link to Tsavo West or the Kenyan coast (Mombasa). Tsavo East pairs well with beach extensions, Tsavo West’s Mzima Springs visits and multi-park circuits; use the filters to find Tsavo East trips by trip type (adventure, family, budget or luxury) or click Request a free quote to add Tsavo East into a personalised Kenya safari itinerary.
