The Sirimon — Teleki — Mackinder — Chogoria traverse is one of Mount Kenya’s most rewarding routes, prized for its variety of landscapes and superb summit prospects. Starting on the gentler Sirimon side, the route climbs through montane forest and open moorland before entering the dramatic high-altitude worlds of Teleki and Mackinder — where glacier-carved valleys, tarns and sweeping ridgelines set the scene for the summit push to Point Lenana (4,985 m). The descent via Chogoria rewards climbers with spectacular gorges, waterfalls and the famous glacier lakes, making the circuit a photographic and naturalist’s dream.
This route is best suited to fit walkers and aspiring mountaineers who want a balanced mix of safe acclimatisation and adventure. Typical itineraries run 4–6 days with staged ascents, experienced mountain guides, porter support and nights at established camps or huts (Mackinder/Teleki high camp options). Expect changing weather and cooler temperatures at altitude, so careful layering, good boots and basic high-altitude preparedness are essential. Popular travel windows are the drier months (January–March and July–October) when tracks are firmer and summit chances are highest. For travellers who want to pair peak-bagging with Kenyan wildlife, the Sirimon–Chogoria traverse combines naturally with nearby safari extensions to Laikipia or Samburu.
